How the jaw and neck affect each other

Jaw pain rarely shows up alone. Many of our patients also have a stiff, tight neck, tension at the base of the skull, or pain that seems to move between the jaw and neck. That's because the two are closely connected, and treating only one often brings only partial relief.

  • Shared nerve pathways. Pain signals from the upper neck and the jaw meet in the same area of the brainstem, so neck problems can be felt in the jaw and face, and the reverse.
  • Head posture. When your head sits forward, as it often does at a desk or on a phone, your jaw's resting position changes and your chewing and neck muscles work harder.
  • Muscle tension. Clenching tightens the neck muscles too, and a tight neck makes jaw muscles harder to relax.
  • Injury. Whiplash or a fall can strain the jaw and neck at the same time, even without a direct hit to the jaw.

Signs your jaw and neck pain are connected

  • Jaw pain along with neck stiffness or tension at the base of the skull
  • Jaw or face pain that gets worse with long hours at a desk or on your phone
  • Headaches that start in the neck and spread to the temples or jaw
  • Jaw pain that started after a car accident, whiplash, or fall
  • Clenching that comes with tight shoulders and neck
  • Ear fullness or ringing that changes with neck movement

Our approach

How physical therapy helps jaw and neck pain

We treat the jaw and neck as one system. Your plan is built from your evaluation and typically includes:

  • Hands-on manual therapy for the jaw joint, chewing muscles, and upper neck
  • Dry needling for tight, tender jaw, neck, and shoulder muscles, when appropriate
  • Neck and posture exercises to support a more comfortable head position
  • Jaw exercises to restore relaxed, comfortable movement
  • Workstation and habit coaching for desk setup, phone use, clenching, and sleep posture
  • A home program so you keep improving between visits

Jaw and neck problems often bring other symptoms along. Learn more about TMJ headaches, somatic tinnitus, or TMJ treatment in Atlanta.

FAQ

Jaw & Neck Pain: Common Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about the jaw and neck.

Yes. The neck and jaw share nerve pathways and muscles, so neck tension and head posture can cause or worsen jaw and face pain. Jaw problems can also tighten the neck.

Yes. Neck pain is common in people with TMJ disorders. Clenching and tight jaw muscles increase tension in the neck and shoulders.

Yes. A forward head position changes where your jaw rests and makes your chewing and neck muscles work harder. Posture is rarely the only factor, but it's often part of the picture, especially with long hours at a desk or on a phone.

Yes. Jaw pain can start after a car accident or whiplash, even without a direct hit to the jaw, because the rapid head motion strains both the jaw and neck. We evaluate and treat both.

Each can keep the other irritated. Treating only the jaw or only the neck often brings partial relief, while treating both together tends to produce longer-lasting results.

No. In Georgia, you can start physical therapy without a physician referral.
