 Sound familiar?

## How can the TMJ cause ear pain?

You have ear pain, but your doctor says your ears look fine. Antibiotics didn't help, and the ache keeps coming back. This is one of the most common stories we hear, because the jaw is one of the most common sources of ear pain that isn't an ear problem.

Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sits just in front of your ear canal, and the jaw and ear share nerve supply. When the joint or the chewing muscles around it are irritated, your brain can read that pain as coming from the ear. Doctors call this referred ear pain.

## Signs your ear pain may be coming from your jaw:

- Ear pain with no infection found, or that didn't improve with ear treatment
- Pain in or just in front of the ear that gets worse with chewing, talking, or yawning
- A plugged, full, or pressure feeling in the ear
- Tenderness when you press just in front of your ear or along your jaw
- Jaw clicking, popping, tightness, or limited opening
- Clenching or grinding, or ear pain that's worst in the morning
- Headaches at the temples or neck tension along with the ear pain

Some people also notice ringing that changes when they move their jaw or neck. We evaluate that too.

 Our approach

## How physical therapy helps ear pain from the TMJ

We treat the jaw joint and muscles that are sending pain to the ear. Your plan is built from your evaluation and typically includes:

- **Hands-on manual therapy** for the joint and the chewing muscles, inside and outside the mouth
- **Dry needling** for tight, tender jaw, neck, and head muscles, when appropriate
- **Jaw exercises** to restore smooth, comfortable movement
- **Neck and posture work,** since neck tension often adds to jaw and ear symptoms
- **Habit coaching** for clenching, jaw resting position, and sleep posture
- **A home program** so you keep improving between visits

If your jaw also clicks or catches, see our page on [jaw clicking and popping](https://physicaltherapytmj.com/services/jaw-clicking-popping?hsLang=en), or learn more about [TMJ treatment in Atlanta](https://physicaltherapytmj.com/services/tmj-treatment?hsLang=en).

 Your first visit

## What to expect at your first visit

If anything in your exam points to an ear problem rather than the jaw, we'll tell you and help you get to the right provider.

- #### 1. A full history

Including what's already been checked with your ears.
- #### 2. A hands-on exam

Of the jaw joint, chewing muscles, and neck, to find what reproduces your ear symptoms.
- #### 3. A clear explanation

Of whether your jaw is the likely source, in plain language.
- #### 4. Treatment the same day

Plus a home program to start right away.

### When to see a doctor or ENT first

Ear symptoms should always have an ear exam first. See your doctor or an ENT before starting TMJ care if you have ear drainage, fever, pain or swelling in the ear canal, dizziness or vertigo, ringing that pulses with your heartbeat, facial weakness, or ear pain that won't go away on one side. **Sudden hearing loss is a medical emergency:** see a physician the same day.

 FAQ

## TMJ Ear Pain: Common Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about ear pain and the jaw.

##### [Can TMJ disorders cause ear pain?](https://physicaltherapytmj.com/services/tmj-ear-pain#collapse1-widget_1793021689632)

Yes. The jaw joint sits just in front of the ear canal and shares nerve supply with parts of the ear, so jaw problems commonly cause pain that feels like it's in the ear.

##### [How do I know if my ear pain is from my jaw?](https://physicaltherapytmj.com/services/tmj-ear-pain#collapse2-widget_1793021689632)

Common clues are a normal ear exam, pain that gets worse with chewing, talking, or yawning, tenderness just in front of the ear, jaw clicking, and clenching or grinding. A TMJ evaluation can confirm whether your jaw is the source.

##### [Can TMJ disorders cause ear fullness or pressure?](https://physicaltherapytmj.com/services/tmj-ear-pain#collapse3-widget_1793021689632)

Yes. A plugged or full feeling in the ear is common with TMJ disorders, often alongside tight jaw muscles. If the fullness is new, have your ears checked by a doctor first.

##### [Should I see an ENT or a physical therapist?](https://physicaltherapytmj.com/services/tmj-ear-pain#collapse4-widget_1793021689632)

If your ears haven't been examined, start with your doctor or an ENT to rule out infection and other ear problems. If your ear exam is normal and the pain continues, TMJ physical therapy is a good next step.

##### [Can TMJ disorders cause ringing in the ears?](https://physicaltherapytmj.com/services/tmj-ear-pain#collapse5-widget_1793021689632)

Some people notice ringing that changes when they move their jaw or neck. This is called somatic tinnitus, and we evaluate it as part of your TMJ exam.

##### [Do I need a referral?](https://physicaltherapytmj.com/services/tmj-ear-pain#collapse6-widget_1793021689632)

No. In Georgia, you can start physical therapy without a physician referral.
